Does my data stay in Europe with a US cloud provider?

Data residency (where it's physically stored) can be guaranteed in Europe. Legal sovereignty (who can lawfully compel access to it) can't, for a US provider, because of the US CLOUD Act. We always separate these two questions before choosing an architecture.

What sovereign alternatives exist?

European models such as Mistral (including self-hosted deployments), or open-source models hosted on infrastructure you control, whether a European cloud or on-premise. The choice depends on your actual level of requirement and your resources.

Does the EU AI Act force me to host in Europe?

No. The AI Act doesn't deal with data location at all. That's a matter for GDPR and for your own sovereignty requirements. The AI Act itself requires you to classify your AI uses by risk level, be transparent, and train your staff.

Is this only relevant for large companies?

No. SMEs and mid-sized companies in sensitive sectors (health, defence, critical customer data) often face the strictest requirements of all. Proportionate solutions exist at their scale too.
